Cute Overboard

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

After months of planning, my sister-in-law’s baby shower is happening this weekend. Ever since I volunteered to host the party, I’ve been neck-deep in cute. My husband says I’ve been losing my mind and claims it’s evident in my blog entries. We’ll see whether I go back to my usual gloom and doom once I’m out of cuteness land!

The theme for this weekend’s party is sailboat-meets-birds nests-meets-party pennants… Fun!

Have a great weekend! I’ll be back sometime next week.

Aflutter

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

December of last year’s Dior Homme store installation by Italian artist, Andrea Mastrovito.

“The project was commissioned by Dior Homme artistic director Kris Van Assche, inspired by his whimsical Fall/Winter ‘08 collection, which featured butterflies on everything from blazers to t-shirts, and even butterfly-shaped bow ties. Nine thousand black decoupage replicas serpentine across the ceiling and walls of the white boutique, like Hitchcock’s birds only less menacing, and much prettier. They’ll be around for a month before flying away in the new year.”

Inspiration

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I always enjoy seeing artists’ and designers’ sources of inspiration, sketches, and mood boards. In December 2004, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano for Dior, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Valentino, and Ralph Rucci, revealed the inspiration behind their fall couture collections through exclusive collages produced for Harper’s Bazaar.

Model Cards

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Love the hand-done quality of One Management’s model cards for spring 2010. The design is noticeably inspired by iconic photographer Richard Avedon.

One Management is obviously partnering up with a very talented graphic design group as the models’ books on the website are very well done as well.

With a Bit of Restraint

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Lyell’s designer, Emma Fletcher believes in the kind of glamour that is achieved with a bit of restraint. Season after season, Lyell’s line is a collection of girlish, nostalgic and vintage-inspired pieces. “Lyell has the fine details of early century clothing, but the shapes can be quite modern,” Fletcher says. “I think overall, there is a sense of understated grandeur to the line.

More than anything, I love the designer’s collages for Lyell and Fletcher [an on-going collaboration with Urban Outfitters].

On the Bright Track

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Bright doesn’t have to be obnoxiously trendy, not when it’s when set against austere grey or stark white. In minimal interiors, just a small touch of color packs a punch. Dressing in brights follow the same principle. I’m of the belief that a hint of tangerine-orange or punch-pink, say under sheer white, is more effective than full-on Rainbow Bright. When in doubt, I just ask myself, “What would Helmut do?”

What is Style?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

We are shaped and fashioned by what we love. — Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

What is style? I’m sure we’d all like to be thought of as stylish, but what does it actually mean? Firstly, let us differentiate style from fashion. Where the latter is whimsical, readily available and consistent only in its inconsistency, style is enduring. It’s about personal choice. To be stylish is not to be anti-fashion, rather it’s an edit of what’s out there in order to create a look that’s individual. It’s the difference between dictated-must-have and love-it-but-prefer-it-in-another-color. In short, having style is knowing who you are, what makes you feel good and sticking to your guns no matter what! If you love it, that’s all that matters. —Michelle Ogundehin, Editor of UK Elle Decor (Oct ‘06)

The energy of imagination, deliberation and invention — these are the ingredients of style. And all who have it share one thing: originality. —Diana Vreeland
