Mix Up

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I’m not typically the pattern-wearing type, but I’m slowly coming around to the idea of it. Surprisingly, I particularly like the mad-cap print-on-print that’s going on. Prada Resort 2010 and Balenciaga Resort 2010 were in the mix of pairing pattern-on-pattern. So was 1. Duro Olowu’s Spring/Summer 2010 // 2. If clothing isn’t one’s cup of tea, one could always send mixed messages through tableware. Area Ware’s plates were inspired by mistakes. If they were accidents, the results were certainly happy. After all, no one wants to be super matchy-matchy.

New Terrain

A few utterly contemporary takes on the old themes of oddly geometic forms drawn from nature: 1 & 4. Balenciaga Fall 2010, images via Style // 2. Chilewich Coral vinyl table runner // 3. Louisa Vilde’s Terrain rug only looks 3d. Image via Designboom.

Fly Girl

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Jet set, go. Just because you’re not going anywhere, doesn’t mean one can’t look fly. That, and I’ve been on a kitsch kick as of late.

1. Leather jacket with detachable collar, Acne // 2. Lanvin aviators, available at Shopbop // 3. 14k propeller plane charm, Charmco // 4. Balenciaga 2004 flight bag // 5. Hundreds of plane tickets, airline baggage tags, parking permits and travel ephemera from 70 coutries are compiled in Carouschka’s Tickets book, Amazon.

Soft Spot

When polka dots are tone on tone or, as in the case of Ferm-Living’s wall graphics, organic in treatment, they remain playful yet have a decidedly grown-up look.

1. Comme des Garçons polka dot embossed leather wallet, available at Opening Ceremony // 2. While George Nelson’s quirky Marshmallow sofa isn’t one of my personal favorites, it remains one of the most iconic pieces in modern design, Circa 50 // 3. Ferm Living’s Waldots wallpaper // 4. Nicolas Ghesquiere sent models down the runway in polka dotted, sheer tights for Balenciaga’s F/W ‘09 collection. Similar tights can be had from Walford, at Neiman Marcus // 5. Inhabit’s Braille Wall Flat is a customizable wall hanging made with 100% bamboo pulp.

In the Cut

Monday, July 6th, 2009

They may flirt with the peek-a-boo concept, but there’s nothing coy about these designs.

1. Solenne Morigeaud’s laser-cut Smoke and Mirrors is a collection of etched and layered mirrors. The artist describes the collection as products for the home that blur perceptions and create illusions of depth. Originally seen at Decor8 // 2. Balenciaga’s cold-shoulder dress, from the futuristic S/S ‘09 collection. Looks like something Deckard’s Racheal would probably wear today or, you know, tomorrow. Image source // 3. Temperley London S/S ‘09, shoulder-baring silk jersey top, available at Net-a-porter // 4. Bela Borsodi’s magazine editorial, Delikatessen. Borsodi is represented by Art Dept // 5. Publique Living’s clever die-cut PopMat Paper Placemats are almost too pretty to use. Lian Ng’s coordinating cut-out Butterflies Voltive Cuffs are available at PubliqueShop.
