Hello

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

I am taking a short blogger’s break. However, I would like to take this opportunity to say that my thoughts and heart are with Boston and all those who are affected by the recent incidents.

{J.Crew} Has it Covered

Friday, January 25th, 2013

As far as apparel mail order catalogs, J.Crew has released some of the most memorable covers. On the top of my list is August ‘09 {upper left}, shot in Monterey, California. Widely romantic, the cover sells more than cashmere sweaters, it sells narrative and a poetic, contemporary look at Americana {Do you suppose she’s reading Faulkner?}. My second favorite must be from March ‘08 {upper right}, shot in Palm Springs at the ever photogenic Kaufmann Glass House by architect Richard Neutra.

While the J.Crew Style Guide from October ‘12 {lower left} features the significantly larger logo, it is utterly devoid of J.Crew products. The Sept ‘11 cover makes my favorites list because, as a former dance student who gave up ballet in my teens, I realize that {not unlike myself} most women  are frustrated ballerinas. The cover image is not so much about the cozy  sweaters worn by women and girls photographed, rather it depicts a common female desire — to be graceful as a ballerina.

Power Plant

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Engineer turned photographer, Steve Back, captured over the course of three years images while in aircraft over Hutt Lagoon in Kalabarri, Western Australia. The insanely saturated colors are undoctored, capturing the largest micro algae production plant in the world — with colors so vibrantly powerful, the plant is sourced as food coloring. {See more of Steve Back’s work online. Photo Finish

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Known for his fashion photography, including collaborations with Alexander McQueen, photographer Nick Knight spent over three years in the herbarium of London’s Natural History Museum capturing a different kind of beauty.

For his 1993 installation Flora, Knight mapped the  historical movement of flora and fauna, ultimately  choosing 46 final specimen to photograph. Shown is a sample of his photo-paintings from the series. {Via the Show Studio Tumblr}

Little Black Jacket

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

109 celebrities — including Riccardo Tisci, Tilda Swinton, and Charlotte Gainsbourg — were lensed by Karl Lagerfeld for the book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld. The book will be available in bookstores starting fall 2012. In the meantime, you can watch the video which documents how a classic Chanel jacket is created or see more of the images online.
