Six days of sun, swim and good eats at Capella Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas [thanks to a great deal on Gilt's Jetsetter]. I couldn’t have asked for a more relaxing vacation.

Why not make like you’re enjoying a sun-kissed day at the beach? Even when you’re not.

Out of the Box

1. Considered one of today’s most important architects, Frank Gehry uses unusual materials for his architecture and furniture designs. With his “Easy Edges” series, from 1972, Gehry succeeded in transcending the boundaries of design by lending such everyday materials as cardboard a new aesthetic dimension. Pictured here is the Wiggle Side Chair — one of the four models from the series. Created out of approximately 60 layers of cardboard with fibreboard edging, the chair is produced by Vitra and is available at HiveModern // 2. The Aésop skin care store located in Flinders Lane, Melborne, is made entirely of industrial-grade cardboard; from the display shelving, to façade, even counter tops. Designed by March Studio, the Melbourne retail branch is tactile proof that cardboard can be both striking and structurally sound when engineered well // 3. Novel Idea

Need a bright idea for what to do with that trashy novel once you’re done with it?

1. Table of books from designer Richard Hutten’s Layers series. Read more about it at Design Boom // 2. Original Genuine Bookshelf wallpaper by Deborah Bowness // 3-4. Atelier Bom Design’s lamps made from reclaimed books // 5. Pringle of Scotland shop window, spotted on a trip to Hong Kong last year // 6. Detail of Pringle shop window.

Found Objects

Last summer, I spent a few months traveling through Asia, where I visited Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Bargaining for prices stresses me out, nonetheless, I really enjoyed rummaging through the bazaars and hawker stalls for hidden gems.

A few of my finds: 1. Bontoc tribal warrior necklace // 2. Sterling silver Spanish Collonial hair pin // 3. Sterling silver Chinese hair ornament // 4. The only jewelry item featured here that I purchased to wear, turn of the century, Collonial Spanish gold earrings.

While in the Library

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Shu Zhai is a litte teahouse my sister and I chanced upon while in Hong Kong. The two-storey restaurant, modelled to look like a school in ancient China, is just off Stanley Market. Quiet and unassuming—the name translates to library—the food was as aesthetically pleasing as it was tasty. They serve dim sum and dan jia, which are recipes of the local boat people. We had soup dumplings, steamed dumplings, the squid and some veggie sprouts. The place was pure charm and grace. They even sent us off with paper lanterns at the end of the meal.
